A federal judge in Boston struck down an Education Department policy used to terminate teacher-training grants associated with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Reuters reported that U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley ruled in favor of eight Democratic-led states challenging the policy.
The judge found that the directive did not provide clear criteria for determining which programs would be considered DEI-related and did not adequately account for the effect of canceling grants on educators and training programs. The dispute involves hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding.
The ruling addresses the legality of the department's process under the Administrative Procedure Act. Separate questions involving compensation and previously canceled awards may continue in other courts.
