Information you provide
We may collect information you choose to provide, including an email address submitted for newsletters, and information submitted through our tip form such as a name, email address, source link and message. Please do not send passwords, financial account information, Social Security numbers or other highly sensitive personal information through the tip form.
Site usage and article views
The American Desk may record aggregate article-view counts and technical request information needed to operate and secure the site. Our current private article-view counter does not store a visitor's IP address in the article record. We may use limited browser storage to avoid counting repeated views too frequently. Automated crawlers and obvious bots may be excluded from view counts.
Newsroom authentication
Authorized newsroom users may use authentication cookies or similar session technologies to access private publishing tools. These controls are not intended to track ordinary public readers across unrelated websites.
How we use information
We use information to operate and secure the website, publish and improve reporting, respond to tips and requests, manage newsletter subscriptions, measure audience activity, prevent abuse and maintain newsroom records.
Service providers
We rely on service providers for hosting, cloud databases, authentication, email delivery, analytics, research and other technical functions. Those providers may process information on our behalf as needed to provide their services and subject to their own terms and privacy practices.
Sale and targeted advertising
At present, The American Desk does not sell personal information and does not use public-reader information for cross-context behavioral advertising. If our advertising or data practices materially change, this policy will be updated.
Retention
We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, newsroom recordkeeping, security, legal compliance and dispute resolution. Published reporting and associated editorial records may be retained as part of the historical news archive.
Your choices
You may unsubscribe from newsletters using the unsubscribe method provided in the message when newsletter delivery is enabled. For requests concerning personal information, use our Send a Tip form and begin the message with Privacy Request. We may need enough information to verify and process the request.
Children
The American Desk is a general-audience news publication and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly seek personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our services, technology or legal obligations change. Material revisions will be reflected by an updated date on this page.
