POOLESVILLE, Md. - Montgomery County police have arrested a 26-year-old Frederick man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a 27-year-old pedestrian in Poolesville early Sunday.
Police identified the suspect as Travis Edward Lowe of Frederick. He was arrested Monday and charged with failure to return and remain at a collision involving death, along with related traffic charges.
The victim was identified as Dakota Joseph Grimsby, 27, of Poolesville.
The arrest comes one day after police began searching for the driver who struck Grimsby near Fisher Avenue and Milford Mill Road and then allegedly left the scene.
Crash happened early Sunday
Montgomery County police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded at approximately 1:51 a.m. Sunday to a report of a pedestrian struck near 19630 Fisher Avenue.
Investigators said Grimsby was struck by a vehicle in the area. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.
Police initially said the driver did not remain at the scene and was believed to have continued westbound on Fisher Avenue toward Elgin Road.
The Montgomery County Police Department's Collision Reconstruction Unit took over the investigation.
Vehicle debris helped narrow search
Detectives recovered debris from the crash scene that police said indicated the vehicle involved may have been a 2020 through 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 or 3500 pickup truck.
Investigators distributed flyers throughout Poolesville as they searched for the vehicle and its driver.
Police said a tip from a Poolesville resident helped investigators identify Lowe as a suspect.
Detectives subsequently located a white Chevrolet Silverado with front-end damage at a business in Frederick, according to police.
Investigators identified Lowe as the person they believe was driving the truck involved in the collision.
Lowe was arrested in Frederick County and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
Police said he was awaiting a bond hearing following his arrest.
Investigation remains ongoing
The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The charges against Lowe are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The arrest marks a significant development in an investigation that began with police searching for an unidentified driver and vehicle following Sunday's fatal collision.
Authorities have not publicly released additional details about what investigators believe occurred immediately before Grimsby was struck.
Police also have not announced whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
