Afghan national Mohammad Sharifullah was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for participating in a conspiracy to provide material support to ISIS-K, the Justice Department announced Sept. 16.
Federal prosecutors said Sharifullah's activity was tied to a broader campaign of attacks, including the 2021 bombing at Abbey Gate in Kabul that killed 13 U.S. service members and many Afghan civilians. The sentence was imposed in the Eastern District of Virginia.
The Justice Department characterized the case as part of its continuing effort to prosecute people who provide support to designated foreign terrorist organizations.
