LARGO, Md. - A teenage boy was shot Thursday on the campus of Prince George’s Community College in Largo, prompting lockdowns at the college and nearby Largo High School as police searched the area.

The teenager was hospitalized in stable condition with injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader said investigators believe the shooting was targeted and isolated rather than a random attack.

Police said there is no known continuing threat to the community.

Teen walked into medical center

The investigation began at about 11:40 a.m. when authorities were notified that a teenage boy had walked into a nearby medical center suffering from a gunshot wound.

The teen was later transferred for additional medical treatment and was listed in stable condition.

Around noon, officers responded to Prince George’s Community College after receiving a report of a shooting on the Largo campus.

Investigators subsequently determined that the teenager had been shot on college property.

Targeted and isolated, police say

At a Thursday afternoon news conference, Nader said detectives do not believe the shooting was random.

He said investigators believe an argument preceded the shooting, although police have not publicly disclosed what the dispute involved.

No suspect was in custody as of Thursday afternoon.

Police also said they had not recovered the firearm used in the shooting.

Nader said authorities had no reason to believe an armed person was actively moving through either the community college or Largo High School.

Lockdowns ordered as precaution

Prince George’s Community College was placed on lockdown while officers responded and searched the area.

Nearby Largo High School was also locked down because of its proximity to the shooting scene.

Nader said officers established perimeters around both campuses to prevent people from entering while authorities determined whether a broader threat existed.

The lockdown at Prince George’s Community College was later lifted.

Largo High School remained under precautionary restrictions through dismissal before the lockdown was also lifted.

Police said the restrictions were precautionary and that investigators did not believe either campus was facing an active shooter threat.

Large police response

Local television footage showed a substantial law enforcement presence around the college Thursday afternoon.

FOX 5 reported that officers and K-9 teams searched areas around the campus as investigators looked for evidence.

Authorities searched around buildings and other parts of the campus while attempting to determine how the shooter left the area.

Police have not publicly released a confirmed description of the suspect.

Student connected to county school system

Prince George’s County Public Schools said the wounded teenager is a student in the county school system.

The district did not publicly identify the student or specify which school he attends.

Prince George’s Community College President Falecia D. Williams said teenagers regularly attend classes on the Largo campus through dual-enrollment and early-college partnerships with the county school system.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooting was connected to one of those programs.

No continuing threat reported

Nader said police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that the broader public was not in danger.

He said investigators remained confident that detectives would be able to develop additional information in the case.

The shooting remains under active investigation.

Police have not announced an arrest, identified a suspect or disclosed whether investigators have recovered surveillance footage or other evidence from the campus.

Authorities have also not released additional details about the argument they believe preceded the shooting.

What happens next

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify the person responsible.

The college and nearby high school are no longer under lockdown, and police say there is no known ongoing threat to students, staff or the surrounding Largo community.

Additional information is expected as investigators develop a clearer timeline of the shooting and the events that preceded it.
