Two people were hospitalized after a large tree fell onto vehicles stopped on Belmont Avenue in Bala Cynwyd Friday afternoon, according to authorities reported by 6abc.

The tree came down shortly before 1 p.m. in the 100 block of Belmont Avenue near the split with Old Belmont Avenue. Three vehicles were struck while stopped in traffic.

Occupants of two vehicles suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. In the third vehicle, a 43-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lankenau Hospital, while a 28-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and was listed in critical but stable condition, according to the report.

The falling tree also damaged electrical infrastructure. Belmont Avenue was closed between Jefferson and Rockhill while crews cleared debris and addressed damaged wires.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the incident. The initial report did not identify a confirmed reason the tree failed, and no conclusion should be drawn about weather, disease or other causes until officials complete their review.

Drivers in the area should follow local traffic updates while cleanup and utility work continue. The American Desk will update this report if officials provide new information about the investigation or the injured passenger's condition.
